We are living in a digital world where people hop on the internet for all their needs: to shop, to look for directions, to take online courses and most importantly, to do research. A website is now a necessity for almost anyone out there. If you have a business without a website, you are losing a great number of opportunities to gain customers, fans, supporters, or members. But today, businesses are not the only ones who use website: large families are creating sites to stay connected, youth groups at churches use websites to build membership, folks who are passionate about a cause use sites to spread awareness, and even non-profits who are looking for followers and supporters know they need a website. You’ll find many people with websites for different reasons, but one reason that often stops folks is: budget. But it doesn’t have to.

When one goes online and cannot find information for an organization or business, they move on to the next one that does have a website. Your business may have better products or offerings and better prices as well as customer care, but because followers cannot find a website to determine your prices, credibility, or to gather information, they move on to another one who does.

A website is the center of the online presence. Stores can easily sell their products 24/7 if they have a website set up for ecommerce. So, while a store/business generally closes at a certain time, customers can still go to the website and order a certain product or even just find the information they need at any time of day or night. Same for individuals. While you can’t always be available to answer a phone, potential followers can look to your website to find those answers.

By building a website, you are giving your organization or group the opportunity to tell folks that they should trust you. Credibility is key to having a successful organization. Your website should back up your story; if you are bolstering your quality and success through an ‘about’ section, then your testimonials from past clients should be backing that up. That’s the easiest way to build a great image in the eyes of potential customers and clients. Not only that, but every website should include several ways to contact you. Having a success story is also great!

Another reason a website is a must, is to give a great first impression. Having a website shows you are a respectable organization and are successful at what you do. Maybe you do not make big profits just yet, but that site can help them to believe in you, and to create the foundation for you to gain that success over time. Increasing your visibility is a major factor in having a website. Hearing about your company or product from a friend is great, but if your potential clients, followers, or fans can hop online and find out exactly who you are, then you are all set to gaining even more customers or clients!

Some tips and steps to building a website:

  • List categories you would like to feature and everything you will need to include within each, for your customers to learn exactly what they need to know about you.
  • Find an affordable host plan. With so many hosting companies out there, you’ll actually find a variety of offerings and prices. Do your homework and you WILL be able to find one that offers exactly what you need and that fits within your budget.
  • Then, install a website platform that works with your hosting company. If you do not think you can do this on your own, look up tutorials online (they can be extremely helpful in understanding basics) or find a web designer/developer that is cost-effective.
  • HELPFUL TIP: A freelance web designer/developer may not have ALL the experience that a company that builds sites from scratch does, but they will work with you to bring you a website, based on your choice of pre-existing templates, that is fully functional for your needs.
    • PROS & CONS: The difference of hiring a freelancer versus a company:
      • Generally, web-development companies have teams, so each member of the team is an expert in something specific. The con to that, is that it can cost you anywhere from $6,000-$10,000. A freelancer often works on their own. They are most often a one-man team and can’t be an expert at everything. They are usually producing only one or two websites at a time, so their focus is on you; the client. This will probably only cost you $1,000-$2,000.
    • Can’t afford the whole package? Don’t worry! Go with a free site and buy a domain. There are so many free options out there. It’s generally cheaper than $20 a year and you can start having an online presence in a relatively short period of time. It’s a great way of getting something effective out there, and that’s the goal, right?

Take the time to research what works best for you and how much you can spend on your website; then go from there. Not having a website should never be an option. Website presence is a necessity today, even if yours simply states contact information and reviews. That’s really a great start as you can always upgrade as your budget builds. Go get that online presence, business, branding, and credibility that every great business or social entrepreneur has. With a little research, having that advantage is more simple and affordable than ever before!
